06 june 2002 - artcart has done a major site update. first of all the
artcart site has been re- designed. which means quicker access to
artists, artworks and online ordering. second: new artists and works
have added. also online creditcard payments are accepted now. we also
hope that soon other means of payment can be accepted like for example
paypall.

net. also artcart plans at least 2 special occasions a year that will
connect the artists in the artcart exhibition space in special and
artcart artists who sell their works to artcart in general to the

artcart is pleased to announce the launch of south beach disco classics,
an online exhibition exploring the phenomenon of the digital assembled
fuzzy logic.
Exhibition curator Mario Hergueta states " Antonio is offering an
introduction to his private artistic forum for personal expression and
social investigation." He
adds "south beach disco classics is an autistic web galaxy full of
annoying hypnotic sensory overloaded information."
Antonio Mendoza, the son of Cuban exiles, was born in Miami, Florida. He
was raised in Madrid, Spain. In 1983 he received a degree in Semiotics
from
Brown University. In the fall of that year he moved to Los Angeles where
he hoped to land a job in the film industry. Instead, he landed on a
friend's couch
and decided that a career as an artist was more his calling. Many years
later, he still lives in L.A. with his wife, two children and five
working computers.
His art work ranges from classically inspired oil paintings to digital
collages, lenticular images, video projections and interactive web
pages. He has exhibited
digital and analog works galleries, festivals and museums in Los
Angeles, San Diego, Las Vegas, Houston, Zurich, Frankfurt, Karlsruhe,
Sao Paulo, Seville
and Madrid. His work has been reviewed by Artforum, Newsweek, Los
Angeles Times, New York Post, Glue Magazine, Wired, Axcess Magazine, and
several other cyber magazines.
His two web sites, www.mayhem.net and www.subculture.com, combine his
dual interest in art and crime. Together they log over 40,000 page
impressions a
day. In the year 2000 he completed a true-crime book, "Killers on the
Loose," that has been published by Virgin Publishing. On his days off he
plays music
with the digital collective Mr. Tamale.
STATEMENT
In keeping with the end of intellectual property rights, my work has
been created using images, sounds and scripts pirated from magazines,
books, CDs, and corporate and pornographic web sites. my sites work like
meta-collages in which the hyperlinkage between pages acts as an active
element in its assembled logic.
subculture: the autistic web paradise, full of information but stuck in
annoyingly repetitive patterns. corporate logo sabotage. aversion
therapy as HTML code.
south beach disco classics: hard to navigate and as subtle as a ton of
bricks. simple and complicated, discouraging and enticing, organized and
chaotic, beautiful and ugly.
snowcrash: a digital epyleptic seizure. loud, retinal, and disturbing,
with data behaving in ways they shouldn't be behaving.
lara.worm.anime: hypnotic sensory overload. a psychosexual surrealist
collage machine. the chance meeting between anna kornikova and lara
croft anime on the dissecting table.
creepy people: home of the musical semi-abstraction. computer code as
the new paradigm. recycle spam turned into retinal damage.
sex.sit: a peek into the unknown. data-panic gone amok.

for the international backup.award we are at first interested in shorts which are no longer than 15 minutes.

award. backup defines the videoclip as a creative playground for
audiovisual and intermedial experiments in the realm of new media.

"A Similar Place"

Artengine is very pleased to announce "A Similar Place", a new
net art work by Matthijs de Bruijne. This project is Artengine
first guest curated project featuring a European artist.
Last December 2001, Matthijs de Bruijne traveled for the second
time to Buenos Aires, Argentina. This time he brought with him
14 photographs of images from Amsterdam. The purpose was to look
for similar sites in Buenos Aires of generic places - such as
restaurants, trains, roads, fences, houses - that can be found
anywhere in the world. However, when he arrived in Buenos Aires
the country was going through a serious period of economic and
political turmoil, a situation very much different from that of
Amsterdam. It is in this particular context that de Bruijne
developed 'A Similar Place'.
The project explores notions of migration, despair and defeat.
In 14 tableaux Matthijs portrays aspects of life in Buenos Aires
as he experimented it during his stay. The work adopts a cinematic
perspective. Texts are displayed slowly. They appear as subtitles
that enhance the filmic aspect of the piece. The subtitled texts
play on different ranges: documentary, fictitious and personal
reflection. Each image is associated with a text that expresses
the artist's perception of Argentina's new social and economical
order. The sound material recorded on-site displays a very
effective use of ambient sounds, amplifying the paradox between
the images from Amsterdam and the situation in Buenos Aires. The
original combination of texts, sounds and images gives new meaning
to the pictures and creates a poetic story.

Artist info
Born in the Netherlands, in 1967, Matthijs de Bruijne work is
process oriented and formed an invisible network with people.
His work does not only consist of photographs, videos, audio and
texts, etc. - it's a result of a process, a direct communication
with people. This communication is an important element or an
indispensable instrument in his approach. He uses the terms
're-mapping" to refer to his exploration in his work of cities an
new places with which he is not familiar. He graduated from the
Gerrit Rietveld Academie, 1990-1994 (Voorheen Audiovisueel) and
was an artist in residence at the Rijksakademie voor Beeldende
Kunsten (Amsterdam) from 1999-2000. Matthijs de Bruijne works
and lives in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

As part of Open_Source_Art_Hack at the New Museum, Bill Brown of
the SURVEILLANCE CAMERA PLAYERS will lead a walking tour of
the state of surveillance in Soho, Saturday, June 8.
Meet in the New Museum Lobby at 2:00.
Also, on Saturday , May 4, Bill Brown of The Surveillance Camera Players
stepped in front of his favorite webcam on Times Square to perform
"Amnesia,
" an adaptation-homage Denis Beaubois's pioneering 1996 "surveillance
theater" piece "In the Event of Amnesia the City Will Recall".
Video documentation will play in the New Museum's Window on
Broadway till June 30.

I have started working for a site (http://www.bannerart.org/) which hosts
banners created by different artists in gif, jpeg, flash or shockwave
formats.
The concept is for artists to claim a commonly used constuct on the
internet, the "banner", as their own, to use the form and space normally
used by the commercial domain to propagate ideas and artistic talent and to
encourage other sites to host these works of art. A complete "call for
atists" is included at the bottom of this email.
We would encourage you to contribute works in any of the four formats and
look forward to seeing works that push the boundaries of what banners are
and can do while still complying to the Internet Advertising Bureau's
(http://www.iab.net/) guidelines.

Call to artists
All net artists and web designers are invited to contribute to the
Banner Art Collective (http://www.bannerart.org).
The BAC collects and host art and poetry that is created and
distributed within the limitations of web advertising (as defined by
the Internet Advertising Bureau). Artists can create works to add to
the collection, and users can host any work in the collection on
their own page by adding a bit of code to their own HTML.
By creating and distributing art within the limitations of web
advertising, web artists and writers are forced to practice their art
under stringent rules that allow the artist to 1) hone their skills
under strict guidelines and 2) pull off something magical by working
against and within the limitations of a strict form. Artists can more
fully explore the intersections between art and commerce, and (quite
literally) the marginal status of art created for distribution on the
web. And users are forced into a position of enpowerment; as they
discover banner art pieces, they will 1) become aware of the both the
pervasion and possibilities of advertising space on the web, 2)
experience new art in new contexts, and 3) be granted a sort of
patron status, as they can host on their own websites work they find
compelling.
Currently, the project has collected works from artists in Italy,
Germany, France, Belgium, the UK, and the US. BAC works have been
added to sites in Italy, Canada, the UK, and the US. The project has
been mentioned at several web publications: Random, TijdNet, Neural,
and the Hypertext Kitchen.

some fundamental images: The "soldier" is metaphor for the human
individual. "War" is a metaphor for life, respectively the fights of
everyday day life; and the "veteran of war" is the human being who
cannot rid himself of the shadows of the past. Never Wake Up
addresses the loss of identity where the soldiers become distorted
and veterans have difficulty with reintegration into post-war

Daniel Young's NewZoid.
NewZoid is a work of generative art. It plays with the most common
information form of our time - the headline. NewZoid continuously
collects the daily news, tears it apart, chops it up and endlessly
reassembles the pieces into absurd, funny, shocking and
thought-provoking headlines. The Site has been operating on its own
since April 8, 2001. United States. 2001.
Dinorah de Jes=FAs Rodriguez & Gustavo Matamoros's L'Anatomie du D=E9sir.
This assemblage of erotic images, found and damaged footage, and
handcrafted 16mm film was originally projected onto the torso of
Butoh artist Helena Thevenot as part of the one-hour collaborative
piece "The Anatomy of Desire." A tribute to biophysical impulses,
the video version synchronizes the film to its original score by

In the Woods, a collaborative effort between Thom Swiss and Seth
Thompson examines the ideas of memory, aging and loss. The result of
the collaboration suggests the way language (in this case a poem by
Swiss) can be re-represented and changed by images (a film by
